Now, you need somethin’ to lift that heavy beast. Folks call it a jack. Don’t go gettin’ some flimsy little thing, get a jack that’s way overkill, like they say. You want a good, strong one, the kind that can handle your car’s weight, and then some. And them jack stands? You absolutely need those too. Don’t even think about gettin’ under that car without ’em. It’s like holdin’ up the sky with a toothpick, ain’t gonna work.
Okay, so you got your jack and your stands. Where to put ’em? Well, most cars got these special spots, usually near the wheels, front and back. I always lift the front first, like folks say. Your car’s owner manual, that little book they give ya when you buy the car, should tell ya where they are. If you lost it, well, you ain’t the first. Just look around, you’ll figure it out. Or ask your neighbor, maybe they ain’t as forgetful as you.

- Place the jack under the jacking point. Make sure it’s lined up good.
- Slowly pump or crank the jack. Don’t go too fast, or it might slip.
Once the car’s up a bit, you gotta slide them jack stands under somethin’ sturdy, like the frame. Don’t put ’em on no flimsy part. And make sure they’re locked in good. Then, slowly lower the jack until the car’s sittin’ on the stands. Give it a good shake to make sure it’s stable. If it wobbles, somethin’ ain’t right. Fix it before you get under there.
Now, if you ain’t got a fancy jack, there’s other ways, I reckon. Some folks use wood, them wood studs, they call ’em. Stack ’em up like pancakes, but make sure they’re strong and steady. Others use them steel ramps, looks like little hills for your car. Then there’s oil change ramps and race ramps. Seems like there’s a ramp for everything these days. Or you can build somethin’ yourself, but you better know what you’re doin’, or you’ll have a car on your head before you can say jackrabbit.
Lifting your car, it ain’t just for fixin’ stuff. Some folks do it to make their cars look all fancy, liftin’ the whole dang truck up high. But lemme tell ya, messin’ with that suspension stuff, it ain’t always good. All that bumpy road travel, like we got around here, it can wear things out faster than a hen pecks corn. Your shocks and springs, they might not last as long. And if you ain’t careful, you can make your car ride rougher than a cob.
